Southampton manager Ivan Juric heaped praise on Joe Aribo for his versatility after Southampton’s 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday.
The Super Eagles midfielder, featuring in an unaccustomed left centre-back role, put in an impressive display and even found the back of the net to give Juric’s side the lead, as Southampton claimed their second victory of the season—and the manager’s first since taking charge.
With Southampton grappling with defensive issues, their woes deepened as Harwood-Bellis was forced off due to injury, followed by his replacement, Jack Stephens, who lasted just 10 minutes before also exiting.

This forced Juric into an unanticipated tactical adjustment, deploying Aribo in the heart of the defence.
Despite operating outside his preferred midfield role, the Nigeria international adapted seamlessly, playing a crucial role in helping Southampton absorb Ipswich’s second-half pressure.
Juric lauds Aribo's selflessness and adaptability in defensive role
Speaking in his post-match press conference, as reported by the club’s official website, Juric highlighted Aribo’s willingness to sacrifice for the team after being deployed in an unfamiliar defensive role.
“Joe [Aribo] for me is a great guy; everything for the team. He doesn’t care if he is a forward, at the back or in the middle. Today he played left centre-back and I think he did a great second half. We worked really hard, really well, and Joe today was great,” the Croatian manager said.

Aribo has featured in 26 matches for the Saints this season, earning a place in the starting lineup for 18 of them. The 28-year-old midfielder has contributed three goals while maintaining an average of 67 minutes per game.
