Nigeria's Super Eagles earned their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Eric Chelle’s first game in charge.
A first half brace from Victor Osimhen was enough to keep Nigeria's World Cup qualifying hopes alive.
With his brace, Osimhen became Nigeria's second all-time top scorer, with 25 goals.

Interestingly, this was the first time Nigeria scored multiple goals in a World Cup qualifier since November 2021.
With that in mind, Nigerians did not hesitate to praise the in-form Galatasaray forward on X (formerly Twitter).

With their victory over Rwanda, the Super Eagles have moved from fifth to fourth. However, although they are still four points behind Group C leaders South Africa, Chelle's troops are in a better position than they started, as Benin and Rwanda's four-point leads have been cut to two and one, respectively.

Nigeria will host Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday, 25 March. This is a must-win for the Super Eagles as the top two teams in Group C (South Africa and Benin) face each other.
Should South Africa fail to defeat Benin away from home, Nigeria could potentially trail by only two points with four matches left to play.
