Boniface: Will car crash victim return to action this weekend?

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has addressed the status of Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface ahead of Die Werkself's trip to face Werder Bremen.

The reigning Bundesliga champions approach the match with uncertainty regarding the fitness of the Nigeria international, who was involved in a motor accident following last weekend's victory over Eintracht Frankfurt—a game in which he scored to secure all three points for his club.

As a result, he was excluded from the traveling squad for the UEFA Champions League match against Brest on Wednesday, with German-Nigerian midfielder Francis Onyeka stepping in as his replacement.

While Boniface has not missed any Bundesliga games this season, he now faces the possibility of being sidelined for the first time if deemed unready for the trip to Bremen.

Alonso emphasised that Boniface's participation will depend on the outcome of the final training session, stating that both his physical and mental readiness will be key factors in the decision.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Alonso addressed the fitness status of forward Boniface and highlighted the importance of the upcoming final training session.

“Today is the last test in (final) training,” Alonso said. “If he feels good, both physically and mentally, he will travel to Bremen.”

Boniface has already made eight goal contributions for Leverkusen this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in nine games.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old notably missed out on the nominees for the 2024 CAF Men's Player of the Year award, much to the dismay of many football fans, considering his stellar 2023/24 campaign.

During this season, he was the focal point of Leverkusen's attack, helping the team stun perennial domestic champions Bayern Munich to clinch their maiden Bundesliga title, along with the DFB-Pokal. In that thrilling and glorious run, Boniface contributed 21 goals and 10 assists.
