Bassey: Is Super Eagles hardman fit for Fulham’s trip to Sheffield United?

Nigeria international Calvin Bassey is expected to recover in time for Fulham’s Premier League game against Sheffield United this Saturday.

The centre-back has been a key figure in Marco Silva’s side, having played 20 matches in the league this season, as the Cottagers sit in 12th position.

Bassey’s last game for Fulham was in the 3-0 home victory against Tottenham Hotspur before the March international break. However, the defender wasn’t able to feature for his country despite joining the Super Eagles for the friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

The former Ajax rearguard suffered an injury in training ahead of the game against the Black Stars and was subsequently not named in the matchday squad, with Findi George’s side going on to beat their West African rivals 2-1 last Friday.

Nigeria decided not to take any risks with Bassey’s injury and allowed the defender to fly back to Fulham for further assessment, therefore missing the Super Eagles’ 2-0 defeat to Mali on Tuesday.

Calvin Bassey’s injury not as bad as feared

Having now been assessed by his club, it was been revealed that Bassey’s injury is not as bad as feared and he should be fit for this weekend’s Premier League game.

The Evening Standard reports that the 24-year-old is on course to recover in time for the game against Sheffield United, as Fulham aim to make it back-to-back wins in the league.

Bassey’s injury on international duty had led to fears that he could be ruled out for the next few weeks but the latest update indicates that his absence from the Super Eagles camp was just a precaution.

Ex-Rangers defender Calvin Bassey has played 23 matches in all competitions this season, and has been ever-present in Silva’s team since joining Fulham from Ajax last summer.
