Can Noni Madueke still play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles?

Anglo-Nigerian forward Noni Madueke left fans in awe with a stunning hat-trick during Chelsea's 6-2 Premier League triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 22-year-old, born Chukwunonso Madueke, delivered his best performance yet in a Blues shirt, reigniting the debate over his international future.

Madueke's dazzling display has not only thrilled Chelsea supporters but also caught the attention of fans of the Super Eagles. With the winger's Nigerian heritage, many are hopeful that he might choose to represent the country of his descent rather than England, where he was born and has spent most of his life.

Madueke's journey at Chelsea has been a gradual one. After a modest start to his Blues career, the young winger is beginning to find his feet. His performances in pre-season, where he notched three goals and an assist in five matches, were a bright spot in an otherwise lackluster period for the club.

The former PSV Eindhoven winger has carried this form into the new season, contributing four goals in his first two competitive games across the Premier League and Europa Conference League.

Noni Madueke's international eligibility

Born in London to Nigerian parents of the Igbo tribe, Noni Madueke is eligible to play for Nigeria's senior men's national team, the Super Eagles.

Despite his dual nationality, his international career has so far been dedicated to England. He has represented the Three Lions at various youth levels, including U-16, U-17, U-18, and U-21, scoring seven goals in 20 appearances for the U-21s.

Notably, Madueke was part of the England squad that won the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where they did not concede a single goal throughout the tournament.

Despite his accomplishments with England's youth teams, Madueke has yet to receive a senior call-up, leaving the door open for a potential switch to Nigeria.

However, given his recent form and growing prominence at Chelsea, it is increasingly likely that England will soon come calling, potentially ending any hopes of him donning the green and white of Nigeria.
