Osimhen: ‘Conte can tame undisciplined star’ – Napoli legend

Published on by , updated on

Napoli legend Alessandro Renica has voiced his support for Victor Osimhen to remain at the club, despite ongoing speculation about a potential departure.

Renica believes that Antonio Conte's disciplined approach could significantly enhance the star forward's performance and overall career trajectory.

Conte was appointed Napoli's new manager in June, succeeding Francesco Calzona. He has been entrusted with the task of restoring the club's lost glory following a challenging 2023/24 campaign.

Napoli will miss out on European competition next season after finishing 10th in Serie A, a stark contrast to their league triumph just a year ago, which marked their first title win in 33 years.

One player who played a pivotal role in Napoli's historic achievement is Victor Osimhen. The Nigeria forward scored 26 goals, leading Napoli to their Scudetto triumph, but a down campaign and an agreement with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis means he is almost certain to depart Naples this summer, despite joining Napoli for pre-season.

In an interview with Radio Punto Zero, as reported by Tutto Napoli, former Napoli defender Renica highlighted the potential advantages of Osimhen remaining at the club under new manager Conte.

Renica said, “Osimhen? Conte's authority can do him good, given that he is a bit undisciplined. If he were to stay, it will be a great championship with Conte. In any case, we are talking about a top player.”

The 61-year-old represented I Partenopei from 1985 to 1991, amassing 136 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

During his tenure, he secured two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, one Supercoppa Italiana, and the UEFA Cup, solidifying his legacy at the club.
