Cyriel Dessers played a key role in Rangers' 2-0 victory over St Johnstone in the round of 16 of the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday, delivering both a goal and an assist to secure their place in the next round.
Philippe Clement's side created numerous opportunities but was kept at bay by St Johnstone, who struck the woodwork during a goalless first half.
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute, with Cyriel Dessers, introduced at halftime, finding the net. Dessers also played a pivotal role in Rangers' second goal, providing an assist to Ross McCausland in the 92nd minute, securing a comprehensive victory.
Saturday's goal was Dessers' third goal in five games at Hampden Park. This performance comes after the 29-year-old faced criticism from fans following Rangers' exit from Champions League qualifying, marked by a 2-0 defeat to Dynamo Kyiv at home last Tuesday.

In the aftermath of the game, a video circulated on social media showing him showing him gesturing and appearing to swear at the fans did the rounds on social media.
During the match, as Dessers received the ball and quickly lost possession, he was met with audible discontent from the crowd. In response, the striker raised his arms and appeared to express frustration, a moment that was captured by TV cameras.
Dessers reflects on strong start: “Goals will follow with hard work
Dessers is pleased with his impressive start to the season, stating, “I am pleased with my start to the season. I work hard for the team, I do the things the manager asks of me and then I know the goals will follow,” he told Rangers TV.
The Nigerian striker is also satisfied with his recent contributions, adding, “That’s the case right now, I am happy for a goal and an assist for Ross as well.”

Dessers emphasised the importance of teamwork and preparation, noting, “We work a lot on finishing and Ross has the right mentality and I am glad he got rewarded.”
