Ajax boss Farioli oddly praises unwanted Akpom, labels him ‘priceless’

Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has lavished praise on forward Chuba Akpom for his remarkable dedication and selfless efforts on the pitch, highlighting the invaluable role he plays in the team's overall success.

The Arsenal academy product, who is waiting on a call from Nigeria's Super Eagles, joined Ajax in August of the previous year, arriving with a strong reputation built on his crucial contributions to Middlesbrough's Championship playoff campaign during the 2022/2023 season.

In 31 appearances for Ajax across the Eredivisie and UEFA Europa League, he registered 14 goals and three assists.

Despite often flying under the radar, the Nigeria international's contributions have proven to be instrumental, earning the admiration of his coach.

Farioli highlights Chuba Akpom’s sacrifice

In a press conference ahead of Ajax's Europa League qualifier against Panathinaikos, the Italian manager was effusive in his praise of Chuba Akpom.

“The fact that we concede less is thanks to the last line, but also to the attackers who sacrifice themselves.

“That also applies to Chuba: the work he does for the team is incredible. That is something that is not relevant to you (to a reporter), but for me it is priceless.”

Farioli’s praise for Akpom highlights a notable contradiction, as recent Dutch media reports have listed him among seven Ajax players considered surplus to requirements last month, revealing a double-speak within the club's current stance.

The 28-year-old is reportedly drawing interest from Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart.
