FIFA Ranking: Libya debacle works out for good as Super Eagles rise

Published on by

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed three places in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, moving from 39th to 36th.

Released on Thursday by FIFA, the October rankings reflect the team’s recent unbeaten run in international matches.

On the African continent, Nigeria also rose two places, now ranked fourth behind Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt.

The Super Eagles’ impressive form in the past two international windows was key to this rise.

They secured a 1-0 victory over Libya’s Mediterranean Knights in the first leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, and collected a valuable point in a draw against Rwanda.

Despite travel complications that forced the abandonment of the second leg against Libya, Nigeria's performances were strong enough to yield a significant rise in both global and continental rankings.

Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt remain the only African teams ahead of Nigeria, while Argentina continues to dominate the global rankings, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil.

The Super Eagles’ resurgence positions them well ahead of the next international fixtures, with hopes of further improving their rankings when the next FIFA update is published on November 28, 2024.

The team’s solid performances and upward momentum will be crucial as they continue their campaign for a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
