Iheanacho: Finidi stokes Gran Derbi tensions, brands Sevilla disrespectful over struggling striker

Former Nigeria international and ex-Super Eagles manager Finidi George has criticised Sevilla for their treatment of Kelechi Iheanacho, accusing the club of disrespecting the struggling striker.

Iheanacho has struggled to find his footing at Sevilla since his arrival after completing his contract with Leicester City, with manager Garcia Pimienta consistently preferring Isaac Romero as the team's primary striker.

Even in Romero's absence, the Spanish coach has opted for the younger Stanis Idumbo, further restricting Iheanacho's opportunities for regular playing time.

Finidi urges Iheanacho to seek respect and opportunities elsewhere

Speaking in an interview with Africa Foot, Finidi did not hold back in his assessment of the Iheanacho situation.

“I think they have disrespected him in many ways. They expected a lot from him when he arrived, but it is still early days and he has not been given enough time to settle in.

“In my opinion, he should leave the club if any good offers come along. He is 28 and still has a lot to offer, but he needs somewhere where he will be truly appreciated,” the legendary winger said.

He continued, “Look, every time he's had enough playing time, he's been effective. I don't understand why he never has the confidence he needs in La Liga. I think he's been scorned enough and should leave.”

The 28-year-old has made 11 appearances for Sevilla across all competitions this season, scoring three goals, all in the Copa del Rey. Despite making seven starts, he has averaged just 52 minutes per game.

As a former Real Betis player, Finidi's comments carry added weight, given the fierce rivalry between Betis and Sevilla.

The 53-year-old enjoyed a successful stint at Real Betis from 1996 to 2000, making 130 appearances and scoring 38 goals during his time at the Spanish club.
