Former Super Eagles coach & world champion signs on to ‘revitalise’ second-tier club

Former Super Eagles coach Emmanuel Amuneke has swapped the international stage for the domestic scene after being appointed head coach of Heartland.

Amuneke’s move to the Owerri outfit comes shortly after he was overlooked for the Super Eagles head coach job, which eventually went to Finidi George.

The 53-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Heartland, having previously managed teams in Nigeria (Julius Berger and Ocean Boys), and Egypt (Misr El Makkasa), as well as the Tanzania national team. His most notable achievement was leading the Nigeria U-17 team to World Cup glory in 2015.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma underscored the importance of appointing the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, stating on Monday, “Amuneke’s remarkable career has made us incredibly proud, and his return to our State in this new role brings a wave of optimism.

“Heartland FC has faced a series of challenges in recent seasons, but this appointment marks a renewed commitment to revitalise the club.

“With Amuneke’s wealth of experience and indigeneship to the State, I am confident that this will be a turning point for Heartland FC, guiding it back to its winning ways and reigniting our collective passion for the team.”

Super Eagles legend Amuneke set for immediate NPFL return?

Heartland are currently in the Nigeria National League (NNL) after being relegated from the NPFL last season when they finished 19th on the 20-team table.

However, there is speculation that the club could secure a return to the top flight through a potential takeover of the NPFL slot belonging to Beyond Limits Academy.

Emmanuel Amuneke’s appointment is seen as a significant boost for Heartland, with the club hoping to return to the NPFL at the earliest opportunity. His experience and pedigree will be crucial as they look to rebuild their squad and challenge for honours.

The former Barcelona winger joins a growing list of Super Eagles greats who have ventured into coaching in the NPFL, with Finidi also taking charge of Rivers United following his resignation from the Nigeria national team role.
