Frank Onyeka joins DFB Pokal semi-finalists on season long loan

Published on by

Nigeria international Frank Onyeka has completed a season-long loan move to German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg from Premier League outfit Brentford.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who has struggled for regular playing time under Brentford manager Thomas Frank, is seeking more minutes away from West London as he looks to reignite his career in Germany. The loan deal does not include an option or obligation to buy, with Onyeka expected to return to Brentford at the end of the season.

Onyeka's playing time has been limited since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Nigeria, where he played a key role in the Super Eagles' campaign, helping the team secure a silver medal under the guidance of coach José Peseiro. Despite featuring in two Premier League matches for Brentford this season, both appearances were from the bench, leaving the midfielder frustrated with his fringe role.

The former FC Midtjylland star, who joined Brentford in July 2021, has made 78 appearances for the Bees, contributing one goal and four assists. However, increased competition in Brentford's midfield has seen Onyeka slip down the pecking order, prompting him to seek a move away to secure more game time.

Onyeka was linked with several European clubs during the summer transfer window, including La Liga sides Girona and Valencia. While Girona initially showed interest, Valencia emerged as strong contenders for his signature. However, the Spanish side ultimately pursued a move for Aston Villa's Enzo Barrenechea, leaving Augsburg as the most viable option for Onyeka.

The Nigerian midfielder becomes the third Super Eagles player in the German Bundesliga this season, joining Bayer Leverkusen duo of Nathan Tella and Victor Boniface.

Onyeka has already been named in Bruno Labbadia's 23-man squad for Nigeria's upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, where he will aim to continue his strong international form.
