Genoa push to secure long-term deal for Italian-Nigerian teenage striker

Nine-time Serie A champions, Genoa are making swift moves to tie down Italy-born Nigerian teenager Jeff Ekhator on a long-term deal, as interest from several top European clubs continues to grow.

The 17-year-old forward has been a star at youth level, and his rapid rise hit new heights over the weekend when he scored a stunning goal on his Serie A debut during Genoa's 5-1 defeat to Atalanta.

Coming off the bench in the 83rd minute, Ekhator found the back of the net with a brilliant long-range strike, making him the second-youngest scorer in Europe’s top five leagues this season, only behind Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Despite the heavy loss, Ekhator’s debut goal has raised his profile significantly, with several top clubs now keeping a close eye on his progress.

Genoa wastes no time

Reports suggest that Genoa are already in advanced talks to offer Ekhator a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2029. Transfer expert Nico Schira has indicated that negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives are progressing well, with the deal expected to be sealed once Ekhator turns 18 in November.

The Italian club are determined to fend off interest from European giants and secure Ekhator’s future at Genoa, where he’s seen as a key part of the team’s long-term plans.

Before breaking into the first team, Ekhator impressed at youth level with an outstanding record of 32 goals and 20 assists in 73 games. His performances caught the eye of head coach Alberto Gilardino, who promoted him to the senior squad during pre-season.

Ekhator, who has represented Italy at U19 level, is also eligible to feature in the colors of Nigeria.
