Rohr surrenders, aims to finish behind Super Eagles in AFCON 2025 qualifying

Benin coach Gernot Rohr has lamented his team's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying defeat at the hands of the Super Eagles, placing significant emphasis on the goal conceded just moments before the half-time whistle.

The Cheetahs had resolutely held Nigeria at bay for the entirety of the first half, only to see their efforts undone by a moment of brilliance from Ademola Lookman during added time.

That pivotal strike became the turning point Nigeria needed, with substitute Victor Osimhen adding another, followed by a second goal from Lookman, sealing an emphatic 3-0 triumph for the three-time AFCON winners.

Conceding just before half-time destabilised us – Gernot Rohr

While praising his team’s valiant display, Gernot Rohr noted that the late first-half goal significantly disrupted their strategy.

“It's a difficult result for us to swallow, especially conceding that first goal in the dying moments of the first half. It felt like a jolt to the system for my players,” he admitted.

The German tactician was also quick to acknowledge the depth of the Super Eagles' squad, comparing it to his more youthful team.

“The bench here in Nigeria is extraordinary. We simply don’t have that depth. But I believe my young squad is on a journey. What we showed in our match against the Super Eagles in June was brimming with promise and potential.

“When we miss one or two key players, the difference is felt. After the goal in the second half, we tried to respond and created a few chances, but the Super Eagles' defensive organization was solid.”

For Rohr, the most critical task now is ensuring a strong finish in the group. “Our primary objective is securing second place. That’s why Tuesday's clash with Libya is a must-win,” he said.
