‘Akpom won’t complain about being benched’ – Pundit makes strange case for Ajax to keep striker

Former Netherlands international Wim Kieft has urged Ajax to reconsider their reported interest in Wout Weghorst. The Dutch giants have been linked with a move for the towering forward as they look to bolster their attacking options.

It has been suggested that the Eredivisie giants are open to the sale of Chuba Akpom in order to make room for the arrival of the 32-year-old forward.

The Nigerian striker scored 15 goals in only 11 starts for Ajax last season, but is considering his future in the Dutch capital.

Akpom has made a strong start to the new season at Ajax, benefiting from Brian Brobbey's absence due to Euro 2024 commitments: he has started all five matches for the club, showcasing his importance to the team.

Chuba Akpom's professionalism makes him valuable

Kieft praised Akpom's impact, suggesting he is the ideal backup to Brobbey. He believes the Nigerian wouls not be frustrated by a role on the bench, highlighting his professionalism.

Writing in his column for Telegraaf, the former Netherlands international said: “They already have the ideal second striker in him.

“Akpom is also not someone who will cause a stir if trainer Francesco Farioli keeps him on the bench. Someone like Weghorst won't settle for a place on the second plan.

“The underlying idea to get Weghorst when you have Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom is not clear. Akpom has done well as Brobbey's stand-in so far.

“He is aggressive in the penalty area and often manages to get in front of his man. Only he has some bad luck in finishing.

“Because you don't see Brobbey and Weghorst playing together very quickly, you can foresee problems with those two together in the selection fighting for one place in the point of attack.”
