Nigerian prospect Ugochukwu gets new Premier League home

Chelsea have confirmed that highly-rated Nigerian midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu will spend the 2024/25 season on loan at Southampton.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Blues from Ligue 1 side Rennes last summer, struggled for regular playing time at Stamford Bridge, making just 15 appearances across all competitions.

In search of more first-team opportunities, Ugochukwu has opted for a temporary move to the newly-promoted Saints. Southampton, under manager Russell Martin, have been busy bolstering their squad for their Premier League return and see the young midfielder as a key addition.

The deal, however, does not include an option for Southampton to make the move permanent, as Chelsea remain keen on keeping Ugochukwu as part of their long-term plans.

Initially linked with a move to Everton, the France youth international has opted for a season-long loan with the newly-promoted side. Southampton manager Russell Martin’s footballing philosophy, similar to Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, is seen as a key factor in the decision.

“I feel very happy,” Lesley Ugochukwu told the Saints' official website. “Southampton has a great history. A lot of great players came over here and played for Southampton, so I'm very happy to be part of the team now.

“It was a very easy decision. They just came back to Premier League. When I heard Southampton, when I spoke to the gaffer as well, I said, ‘I have to come here.'

“I’m just here to work hard and give everything for the fans and for myself as well.”

The addition of Ugochukwu also strengthens Southampton’s Nigerian connection, with the midfielder joining Super Eagles duo Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu, as well as Anglo-Nigerian forward Sam Edozie.
