Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman found the back of the net for Atalanta, but his contribution wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat to Napoli at the Gewiss Stadium.

The loss dealt a significant blow to Atalanta’s Serie A title aspirations, leaving them seven points behind leaders Napoli and one point adrift of second-placed Inter Milan.

Playing in front of their home supporters, Atalanta started brightly and took the lead in the 16th minute through Mateo Retegui.

However, Napoli showcased their tenacity and equalized in the 27th minute when Matteo Politano exploited some defensive lapses to slot home.

The visitors took control of the game just before half-time when André Zambo Anguissa set up Scott McTominay, who calmly put Napoli ahead, ensuring the league leaders went into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Atalanta showed great determination in the second half, and Lookman, who has been in stellar form this season, delivered the equalizer in the 55th minute.

The Super Eagles forward showed sharpness in front of goal, scoring a well-taken effort to bring his side back into contention.

Despite Atalanta’s spirited fightback, Napoli had the final say.

Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku rose to the occasion, connecting with a brilliant cross from Anguissa to score the decisive goal, handing Napoli all three points and maintaining their grip on the top spot in Serie A.

Lookman’s overall performance was commendable, as he remained a constant threat during his 76 minutes on the pitch before being substituted for Nicolò Zaniolo.

The 26-year-old showed his involvement with 49 touches and was clinical with his passing, completing 79 percent of his 33 attempted passes.

He also created a key chance and attempted a cross.

Although he struggled in duels, winning only one of his ten ground contests and failing to secure his only aerial battle, his contributions in attack were vital for Atalanta.

With ten goals and five assists in 18 Serie A appearances this season, Lookman continues to be a driving force for Atalanta.
