Napoli vs Juventus: Victor Osimhen’s goalscoring run comes to an end

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen missed a penalty as his Napoli team claimed an important victory over Juventus on Sunday night to move into seventh place in the Serie A standings.

The Naples side can now hope for a respectable finish at the end of the season as they sit four points off the European places and eight points behind the league's top four.

On the other hand, Juventus remain second on the log but have to play catchup as they are now 12 points adrift of league leaders Inter Milan.

Since his appointment as caretaker manager of Napoli, this is the first win for Francesco Calzona at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli have now won 5 home matches in a row against Juventus for the first time in history while Juventus have lost 5 away games in a row against a single opponent in Serie A for the first time since a streak of 6 against Fiorentina between 1960 and 1964.

Victor Osimhen becomes the focal point after miss

In what was the Serie A's biggest fixture in this matchday, the hosts took the lead through Georgian Kvaratskhelia in the 42nd minute when he shot past Szczesny in goal for the visitors.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is now the 1st player to score in both his first two home matches for Napoli against Juventus in Serie A in the ‘three points for a win' era (since 1994/95).

In the second half, Szczesny was then called upon to make a save from 12-yards out, and while he did save Osimhen's penalty, Raspadori latched on the rebound to give the hosts the lead.

That goal in the 88th minute was good enough to secure all three points for Napoli.

The win extended Napoli's run since they had their caretaker manager but focus was on the Nigerian who seems not to be lucky with scoring from the spot lately.

Osimhen has now seen his goal scoring run halted by the second placed team, Juventus.

Osimhen transfer news: Can Napoli keep him beyond the summer?

Despite his penalty miss in the victory, many suitors are still vying for his signature as it is difficult to see Osimhen staying at Naples beyond this current season.

Paris Saint-Germain have pencilled him as a replacement for their outgoing forward Kylian Mbappe while Chelsea have gone further by opening talks with his agents for a possible conclusion on agreeing to his personal terms.

However, the Blues would have to compete with the team in Paris on meeting his buy-out clause of €130 million.
