Revealed: Nigeria’s failed pursuit of Golden Boy nominee before 2024 Olympics

Spanish-Nigerian forward Samu Omorodion continues to make headlines following his exceptional performances in Portugal with FC Porto. However, questions remain about his international future, with both Nigeria and Spain expressing interest in securing the 20-year-old striker.

Omorodion, who has represented Spain at various youth levels, was reportedly contacted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) before the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the hope of tying him to the Super Eagles.

According to Spanish publication Diario AS, the NFF made an effort to call up Omorodion for Nigeria’s senior national team ahead of the Olympics. However, the move did not materialize, and Omorodion went on to represent Spain in Paris, where he contributed a goal off the bench in Spain’s gold-winning campaign.

The youngster's impressive performances have caught the attention of Spain’s senior national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, who is reportedly considering him for an upcoming UEFA Nations League call-up.

With Spain lacking depth in the striker position, Omorodion’s physical prowess and ability to run behind defenses make him an intriguing option. De la Fuente’s current options, such as Alvaro Morata and Joselu Mato, are aging, while Abel Ruiz has yet to fully convince at the highest level. Omorodion’s international stock is rising at a critical time for both countries.

At club level, Omorodion is already making a significant impact at Porto following his move from Atletico Madrid this summer. The forward has scored five goals in 298 minutes of action and has established himself as the team’s primary striker, displacing Danny Namaso. With four consecutive scoring games under his belt, Omorodion’s form in Portugal suggests he is ready for the next step in his international career—whether it be with Spain or Nigeria.
