Nigeria U-20: Who should be leading candidates for Flying Eagles head coach role?

Published on by

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially begun the search for a new coach to lead the Nigeria U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles.

The vacancy arises following the expiration of Ladan Bosso’s contract and the team’s underwhelming performance at the Africa Games.

The NFF has set out clear criteria for potential candidates, including a CAF B License, at least five years of coaching experience, and a deep understanding of Nigerian football. With the door open to both local and foreign coaches, a competitive process is expected to unfold.

Afrik-Foot takes a look at four Indigenous coaches who could be in contention for the Nigeria U-20 role.

Olumide Ajibolade: The wildcard

Olumide Ajibolade has emerged as one of the most promising young coaches in Nigeria, thanks to his exceptional work with the Remo Stars Academy, known as Beyond Limits.

Under his tutelage, the academy has transformed into a domestic powerhouse, securing four consecutive titles at The Creative Championship (TCC).

Ajibolade’s coaching acumen extends beyond Nigeria. He made history by leading Beyond Limits to become the first African team to win the prestigious Viareggio Cup in Italy. His achievements are even more remarkable considering he primarily works with players aged 18 and under.

The coach’s tactical prowess and ability to develop young talent have not gone unnoticed. He was part of the backroom staff for the Manu Garba-led Golden Eaglets, contributing to their third-place finish at the 2024 WAFU U17 Championship.

With a UEFA B License in his pocket, Ajibolade is well-equipped to take on a bigger role, and the Nigeria U-20 job seems like a good fit.

Nduka Ugbade: Veteran of the youth set-up

Nduka Ugbade is a seasoned figure in Nigerian youth football. His playing career was complemented by a successful coaching stint with the Golden Eaglets, where he played a pivotal role in the team's 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup triumph.

Ugbade's journey with the national team continued as an assistant to Manu Garba with the Flying Eagles. While his recent outing with the Golden Eaglets at the U-17 AFCON was less successful, his wealth of experience and previous achievements make him a strong contender for the top job.

Possessing a UEFA B Coaching License acquired in Ireland, Ugbade brings a blend of local knowledge and international exposure to the table, and may find a home for his experience with the Nigeria U-20 side.

Emmanuel Amuneke: Super Eagles legend & Former CAF POTY

Emmanuel Amuneke’s coaching career is defined by his historic achievement with the Golden Eaglets. The former Nigerian international led the team to a World Cup triumph in 2015, a campaign that also saw Victor Osimhen emerge as a global star.

However, Amuneke’s coaching journey has not been without its challenges. His tenure with the Flying Eagles ended in disappointment after failing to qualify for the U-20 AFCON in 2016.

Amuneke’s experience at the highest level of youth football, coupled with his UEFA Pro License, makes him a potential candidate for the Nigeria U-20 job. However, his recent setbacks might raise questions about his ability to consistently deliver results.

Paul Offor: Nigeria U-20 a logical step for a maverick?

Two seasons ago, Paul Offor masterminded Sporting Lagos' historic promotion to the NPFL and subsequently delivered the club's first-ever trophy.

However, his tenure was cut short when the team was struggling in the league, occupying 11th position with no away victories after 30 games. Despite recording ten wins, Sporting Lagos bowed out of the Lagos FA Cup, falling to rivals Inter Lagos.

Despite the setback, Offor's talent was recognized by NPFL giants Kano Pillars, who secured his services in July 2024. The UEFA C-licensed coach would bring experience from Warri Wolves and Benin Republic's CIFAS de Djeffa to bear on the Nigeria U-20 position.
