Nigeria stunned by Burkina Faso in WAFU B U-20 Championship opener

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat against Burkina Faso in their opening match of the WAFU B U20 Championship at the Municipal Stadium on Friday. The loss puts immediate pressure on the defending champions, who now face a must-win scenario in their next game.

Early in the contest, Kparobo Arierhi was presented with a golden chance to put the Flying Eagles ahead, but he failed to find the target. Burkina Faso quickly responded, forcing Nigerian goalkeeper Nathaniel Nwosu into action, denying them twice in quick succession, including a calm save from a well-placed free kick.

Despite Nigeria pushing forward, with Kenneth Igboke getting into dangerous areas, the team couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. Igboke found himself in a promising position inside the box but fired his shot wide, further frustrating the attack.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 66th minute when Coulibaly Dramane latched onto a poorly cleared set piece and drilled the ball into the back of the net, giving Burkina Faso the lead.

Nwosu, who had been the Flying Eagles’ standout performer, could do nothing to prevent the goal.

Nigeria struggled to create any clear-cut chances after going behind, with their attempts to respond falling short.

The Flying Eagles now face a critical game against Ivory Coast in their second group match. A loss would likely eliminate them from the tournament, meaning they need to regroup quickly and rediscover their form if they are to advance to the next round.
