Super Eagles' interim manager Finidi George could not conceal his joy as his side secured a satisfying 2-1 victory in the Nigeria vs Ghana ‘Jollof derby' in Marrakech on Friday.
Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers netted a first-half penalty awarded for handball, and Atalanta man Ademola Lookman fired home late off the bench after the Black Stars had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Jerome Opoku.
Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace set up an exciting finale with his composed penalty during stoppage time after Bright Osayi-Samuel fouled Antoine Semenyo.
However, the spirited Black Stars could not find an equaliser in a captivating match in Morocco. This was Nigeria's first victory over Ghana in 18 years.
The result means the four-time African champions are now winless in their last six games.
Nigeria vs Ghana: Finidi's remarks after defeating Black Stars
Finidi expressed his elation following Nigeria's triumph over Ghana. He reflected on the significance of the win and acknowldged the intense rivalry between the two nations.
“I feel happy. I feel happy. It is not easy. You know the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, so coming here to win this game is a lot for me,” he remarked.
Discussing tactical adjustments, Finidi noted the shift to a 3-5-2 formation as compared to the tactics deployed by Jose Peseiro at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) was aimed to alleviate the workload on key players like Osimhen, who was absent due to injury.
“We didn't keep the same formation. I think we played 3-5-2 but in the AFCON, it was only Osimhen and we felt he was doing so much running so I wanted some other player to do that. At least that pair will help,” he explained.
“I feel great. I feel happy for the players. You know I am a coach. I just want to do my job and if I get results like this, it will keep me happy so I will keep pushing,” he affirmed.
When asked about the upcoming fixture against Mali, the interim Super Eagles boss remained pragmatic, accentuating the need to assess player availability and potential formation adjustments.

“Of course, we are here for two games. We will see how we can get the best results in the next match,” he stated. Furthermore, Finidi praised debutant Benjamin Tanimu's performance, citing his adaptability and contribution to the team.
“He is a player that I wanted while he was still at Bendel Insurance but it didn't work. out so with all the injuries that we had, we had to look for a player that can substitute and it came to my mind to invite him.
“Not bad. Not bad. Being his first time, it is not easy wearing that national colours. It is not easy but overall, I will give him credit. It is not a bad one. For the first time wearing that jersey. To be there and up and doing is a great thing,” Finidi gushed.
Regarding the decision to start Tanimu over Kenneth Omeruo, Finidi cited precautionary measures due to Omeruo's injury.
“In training Ken had a knock and I think we couldn't risk him so we will rest him for the next match so that was it,” he clarified.
