NPFL MD 33: As it happened
Bayelsa United 3-0 Shooting Stars (11 April)
Bayelsa United took a significant step towards safety with a commanding 3-0 win over Shooting Stars at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa on Friday.
First-half goals from Ogba Ifeanyi and Magbisa Wisdom put the Prosperity Boys in control before forward Kehinde Lawal added a third just a minute into the second half to seal the victory.
The result extends Bayelsa United’s unbeaten run to seven matches and lifts Ladan Bosso’s side from 19th to 13th on the Nigeria Premier Football League table, with 45 points from 33 games.
Enugu Rangers 0-2 Heartland FC ( 13 April)
Rangers International of Enugu suffered a 2-0 defeat to fierce rivals Heartland FC of Owerri in a highly anticipated Oriental Derby at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday.
Suraju Lawal opened the scoring in the 21st minute before Isaac Nassy doubled the advantage three minutes into the second half, securing a crucial win for the visitors.
The victory provided a timely boost for the Naze Millionaires, who are battling relegation, lifting them temporarily out of the drop zone to 16th on the table.
Although level on 41 points with 17th-placed Nasarawa United, Heartland hold the advantage on goal difference as the 2024/25 NPFL season edges towards its conclusion.
Abia Warriors 2-0 Rivers United (13 April)
Second-placed Rivers United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Abia Warriors on Sunday in a Matchday 33 clash of the NPFL.
Emmanuel Ogbuagu broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, while in-form forward Anthony Ijioma sealed the win in the 76th minute for the Warriors, who were tactically guided by coach Imama Amapakabo.
The result handed Rivers United a setback in their title pursuit, while Abia Warriors, with 53 points from 33 matches, remain third on the log and firmly in the race for a coveted CAF Champions League spot.
Akwa United 1-1 El-Kanemi Warriors (13 April)
In Uyo, Akwa United and El-Kanemi Warriors played out a 1-1 draw in their NPFL encounter.
Osoba Kabir handed the hosts an early advantage with a well-taken goal in the 19th minute. However, the lead was cancelled out when Wisdom Ndon inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, gifting the visitors an equaliser.
Both sides were unable to find a winner in the second half, ultimately settling for a share of the spoils
Ikorodu City 3-0 Niger Tornadoes (13 April)
Ikorodu City delivered a dominant second-half display to secure a convincing 3-0 victory over visiting Niger Tornadoes, notching their 15th win of the season.
Super substitute Ayomide Cole came off the bench to net a brilliant brace, while Shola Adelani added the third to complete the rout. The emphatic win propels the Oga Boys to fourth place on the table, just a point adrift of the top three, as they continue their strong push for promotion.
Kano Pillars 2-0 Lobi Stars (13 April)
At the foot of the table, Lobi Stars’ relegation was confirmed following a 2-0 defeat to Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
The Benue-based side, anchored at the bottom of the NPFL, saw their slim hopes of survival extinguished by a rejuvenated
Pillars outfit claiming their first win in five matches. Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, while Naziru Auwalu sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty.
Heading into the encounter, Kano Pillars had gone four games without victory—losing two and drawing two—but rose to the occasion when it mattered most. The win lifts them to seventh on the log with 47 points, keeping their hopes of securing a continental slot alive.
Lobi Stars, on the other hand, are now mathematically relegated, with just 25 points from 33 matches, making it impossible for them to escape the drop even with maximum points from their remaining fixtures.
Kwara United 0-1 Bendel Insurance (13 April)
Kayode Oke Solomon’s 36th-minute strike proved decisive as Bendel Insurance secured a crucial 1-0 away win over Kwara United in Ilorin on Sunday.
The victory marked Insurance’s second win in their last five away matches, a run that also includes two draws and one defeat. With the three points, they climbed to fifth on the NPFL table with 49 points.
For Kwara United, the loss was their third in five games, during which they have also managed one win and one draw. The Afonja Warriors now sit 11th on the log with 43 points.
Nasarawa United 3-2 Plateau United (13 April)
Nasarawa United secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Plateau United in their NPFL Matchday 33 encounter at the Lafia Township Stadium on Sunday.
Anas Yusuf, the club’s top scorer, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with his 14th goal of the season to give the hosts the lead. Ugochukwu Leonard extended their advantage with a brace, netting in the 54th and 74th minutes to put the Solid Miners firmly in control.
Plateau United responded with goals from Vincent Temitope in the 58th minute and Samuel Pam in stoppage time, but their efforts fell short as Nasarawa United held on for the win.
The victory moved Nasarawa United up to 14th on the table with 42 points, level with Plateau United, who remain just ahead in 13th place on goal difference.
Remo Stars 0-0 Katsina United (13 April)
Remo Stars were held to a goalless draw by Katsina United at the Mohammed Dikko Stadium, yet managed to extend their lead at the summit of the NPFL standings.
Despite being winless in their last three outings—one defeat followed by two successive draws—the Sky Blue Stars now sit comfortably at the top with 62 points from 33 matches, maintaining a seven-point advantage with five games remaining.
For Katsina United, the draw was a valuable result, lifting them to 41 points and 17th place on the log, just three points clear of the relegation zone as the season nears its conclusion.
Sunshine Stars 2-1 Enyimba (13 April)
Sunshine Stars secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Enyimba to bolster their hopes of avoiding relegation in the NPFL.
Goals from Elmer Arunta and Waheed Adebayo powered the Akure Gunners to a hard-fought win, despite Christian Nnaji restoring parity for the visitors midway through the match.
Although Sunshine Stars remain second from bottom on the NPFL table, the spirited performance and result against the nine-time champions will serve as a major confidence boost as they continue their battle for survival.
