Nwabali cools transfer interest – Super Eagles star ‘don’t like to rush’

Published on by

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has emphasised that he's in no rush to depart from Chippa United, despite his notable displays for Nigeria during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024).

Despite it being his debut AFCON tournament, Nwabali emerged as one of the most significant figures in Jose Peseiro‘s Super Eagles team, surpassing Francis Uzoho for the number one position.

The 27-year-old narrowly missed out on the title of best goalkeeper of the tournament to Ronwen Williams, who conceded fewer goals than Nwabali.

Nwabali's exceptional performances in Ivory Coast have sparked significant interest from clubs across Europe, Asia, and Africa, with strong indications that he will make a move to a European club in the next transfer window.

How did Nwabali react to transfer reports linking him to European clubs?

Amidst mounting speculation about his future, Nwabali opened up about the attention he's been receiving from various clubs worldwide.

Speaking to the press, he revealed, “People have been sending messages like they want me to move to Europe or they want me to move to a bigger club.”

Despite the allure of prestigious opportunities, Nwabali expressed his grounded perspective, stating, “I really appreciate that, but to be honest, one thing about me is that I always feel comfortable even if I’m in a small place; I don’t like to rush.”

What clubs are showing transfer interest in Nwabali?

There are murmurs circulating that Nwabali might be on the verge of joining Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, potentially filling the void left by Maxime Wensenns, who is reportedly eyeing a move to Turkey in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Additionally, undisclosed French and Italian clubs are said to be expressing interest in the Super Eagles goalkeeper, along with South African powerhouses Kaizer Chiefs. Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia is also showing keen interest in securing Nwabali's signature.

Nwabali managed to keep four clean sheets for Nigeria during the AFCON, and notably stopped two penalties during the semi-final clash against South Africa.

Did you know Nwabali began his career as a striker?

Nwabali's journey in football holds a fascinating detail: He initially embarked on his career as a striker. Originating from Go Round Football Club in Nigeria, his trajectory shifted when youth coaches there transformed him into a goalkeeper.

In a recent discussion with the press, the 27-year-old disclosed this transition and shed light on his affinity for using his feet on the field. Reflecting on his development, he remarked, “I also learned from many of my coaches at the clubs that, as a goalkeeper, I cannot just remain between the sticks but should also make forays up front to help the team.”
