Former Nigeria mainstay Etebo finally explains transfer to Turkish division 2 club

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo recently shed light on his decision to join Turkish second-division side Genclerbirligi, a move that left many of his fans and well-wishers puzzled.

Having previously played for clubs like Stoke City and Galatasaray, the transfer to a lower-division team seemed an unconventional step for a player of his stature, especially after bouncing back from injury.

However, in an exclusive chat with SportsBoom, Etebo outlined the key motivation behind his decision—one far deeper than most would imagine.

Oghenekaro Etebo motivated by loyalty

After suffering an injury, Oghenekaro Etebo explained that he found himself at a crossroads in his career, uncertain of what the future held.

In a gesture of kindness, Genclerbirligi opened their doors to him, allowing him access to their training facilities without asking for anything in return. For the Nigerian midfielder, this act of generosity struck a chord.

“From January till the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the group—100%,” Etebo revealed

The staff Genclerbirligi also took a keen interest in his rehabilitation, offering him not just tactical guidance, but also invaluable life lessons.

“The (former) coach (Sinan Kaloglu) told me, ‘Etebo, I’d tell you something, even before you sign for any team or before you go anywhere. Just remember that these guys are the ones that looked after you. So it’s very important’,” the 28-year-old recalled.

“I remember, every time the doctor would say to me, ‘Even if it’s 6 months or 1 year, you have to wear this jersey, ’cos we looked after you' and all that”

Despite receiving offers from top-flight clubs both within and outside Turkey, the former Super Eagles mainstay said he had no choice but to choose Genclerbirligi for reasons that can’t be measured in league tables or pay cheque sizes.
