Okoye raves about ‘special’ Super Eagles coach candidate

Maduka Okoye has credited Fabio Cannavaro with playing a pivotal role in his resurgence as a key player for Udinese, after enduring a difficult spell at Watford and a challenging start in Serie A.

The Nigeria goalkeeper, who joined Udinese in the summer of 2023, faced a frustrating period of inactivity, sitting on the bench for 16 consecutive games without making an appearance.

Okoye had to wait patiently, but when veteran goalkeeper Marco Silvestri’s form dipped, erstwhile Udinese boss Gabriele Cioffi made a bold decision to give him his debut against Bologna.

Cioffi got sacked and Cannavaro got the job in precarious circumstances, he stuck with the promoted Okoye.

A mentor like no other for Okoye

This move would prove pivotal, not only for Udinese’s season but also for Maduka Okoye’s career trajectory.

Recalling his first meeting with the former NFF target, the former Watford man was full of admiration for the World Cup-winning defender.

“I’d only ever seen him on TV and played with him on the PlayStation. So when he stood in front of me, put his arm around my shoulder, and said, ‘I’m your new coach,’ it was something truly special. With him, it feels like having a big brother or cousin right there for you,” Okoye told Transfermarkt.

Having struggled for game time at his previous clubs, the 25-year-old found in Cannavaro not just a coach, but a mentor who believed in his potential.

“He’s an absolute gentleman. I can honestly say he’s a special person, someone I’ll keep in personal contact with. I’m really grateful for the trust he’s shown me and the time he’s given me, even off the pitch.”
