Super Eagles hopeful Olatunji reveals burning ambition

Nigerian striker Victor Olatunji has expressed his profound sense of national pride as a footballer, highlighting the fulfillment that accompanies wearing the iconic green jersey of Nigeria.

He also shared that his journey in the sport is inspired by the legends who came before him. Last week, the 25-year-old made headlines by becoming the first Nigerian player to both score and assist in his Champions League debut, and only the third African player to achieve this remarkable feat.

He followed in the footsteps of Gabon's Daniel Cousin, who accomplished this with Rangers against Lyon in 2007, and Ivory Coast's Serge Aurier, who did so with PSG against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2015.

He accomplished this during Sparta Prague's impressive 3-0 victory over Salzburg at the Stadion Letná.

Olatunji: Super Eagles opportunity drives me…

In a recent interview as per Blesk, Olatunji expressed the immense pride he feels at the prospect of representing Nigeria on the international stage, despite not having yet had the opportunity to do so.

“It’s a major goal for every young player, especially for us Nigerians. We are proud to represent our country. Just wearing the green jersey and the eagle emblem motivates a player, reminding them they represent a nation of over 220 million people. That drives you to give your all,” he said.

Olatunji believes that his journey is not solely about personal achievement; it is also about honouring the legacy of those who have paved the way for him.

“Several strikers have inspired me, especially Odion Ighalo, who shone in the Premier League, and Cristiano Ronaldo, whose skills and work ethic I admire.”

Olatunji joined the Czech club in July 2023, making the transition from the Cypriot side AEK Larnaca.
