Red-hot Onumonu strikes again, but Montpellier fall to Dijon

Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu extended her impressive scoring streak but could not prevent Montpellier from falling to a 4-2 defeat against Dijon in the French Women’s Division 1 Arkema on Saturday.

Onumonu’s goal, her sixth in nine league appearances, came in the 75th minute to narrow the deficit to 3-2.

However, Dijon restored their two-goal cushion through Meriame Terchoun just six minutes later, sealing Montpellier's fate.

Despite the loss, the Nigerian international has now scored in five consecutive games for Montpellier, underlining her growing influence in France's top flight.

How Onumonu’s Montpellier lost

Montpellier took the lead early, with Marie Levasseur scoring in the fifth minute from a Jade Rastocle assist. However, Dijon responded quickly, with Viktoria Pinther equalizing in the 29th minute before Malgorzata Grec made it 2-1 just two minutes later. The hosts added a third in the second half, putting Montpellier on the back foot.

Onumonu’s persistence paid off in the 75th minute when she capitalized on a rebound to score her team's second goal. However, Terchoun’s composed finish in the 81st minute dashed any hopes of a comeback.

The 30-year-old Nigerian striker showcased her all-around game with a tireless 90-minute display. She recorded two shots on target and one off target while seeing another effort blocked.

Onumonu completed 15 of her 19 passes (79% accuracy), created two key chances, and engaged in 11 duels, winning four on the ground and one aerially.

Her work rate was evident with 34 touches, two tackles, and two instances where she was fouled. Despite losing possession 11 times and being caught offside once, Onumonu remained a constant threat,
