Onyemaechi: Super Eagles defender impresses despite damaging Boavista loss

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi delivered a standout performance for Boavista, but his efforts were not enough to prevent a 3-2 home defeat to Casa Pia in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Monday night.

The 26-year-old, who has attracted interest from Turkish and Greek clubs, showcased his versatility and quality by scoring his third goal of the season and providing an assist.

Casa Pia took an early advantage, benefiting from two own goals by Rodrigo Abascal and Filipe Ferreira in the 30th and 43rd minutes, respectively, giving the visitors a comfortable 2-0 lead before half-time.

However, Boavista showed resilience and managed to pull one back just before the break.

Onyemaechi, now operating in a more advanced midfield role for Boavista, capitalized on a loose ball following a Boavista free kick, calmly tapping it into the net.

The goal was initially ruled offside, but after a VAR review, it was allowed, sparking hope for a Boavista comeback.

That hope was short-lived as Casa Pia restored their two-goal cushion 10 minutes into the second half.

Boavista’s situation worsened when Pedro Gomes was shown a red card, leaving the hosts with 10 men.

Undeterred, Onyemaechi turned provider later in the game, delivering a precise assist for Róbert Boženík, who scored Boavista’s second goal.

Despite their late push, Casa Pia held firm to secure the victory.
