Osimhen: From Napoli freeze-out to Galatasaray’s most lethal African forward

When Victor Osimhen joined Galatasaray in the summer of 2024, it brought a temporary end to his drawn-out saga with Napoli.

The Nigerian forward had previously extended his contract with the Italian club, with a release clause inserted based on a mutual agreement.

Napoli would get a big payout, while Osimhen would be allowed to leave smoothly.

But things didn’t go as planned.

Napoli reportedly rejected multiple bids that met the clause. Frustrated, Osimhen protested and was later frozen out of the first-team setup. His future at the club looked uncertain.

Enter Galatasaray.

The Turkish giants swooped in and offered Osimhen a way out. And since his arrival, the 26-year-old has become a revelation.

With 29 goals in 33 appearances, Osimhen is statistically the most prolific African forward in Galatasaray’s history based on goals-per-game ratio.

Statistically, Osimhen is Galatasaray's best forward

He currently averages one goal per 103 minutes, clear of all other African players to have played for the club.

Senegalese striker Mbaye Diagne, who scored 26 goals in 62 matches, ranks behind him. Burundi's Shabani Nonda follows with 37 goals in 93 games.

Algeria's Sofiane Feghouli scored 34 goals in 162 appearances, while another Nigerian, Henry Onyekuru, also features in the club’s top five African scorers.

Though Osimhen sits third on the overall African scorers list for the club, he leads in efficiency—no African forward has scored more frequently in Galatasaray colours.

With seven league matches still to play, the former African Footballer of the Year has the chance to climb even higher in the rankings.

Whether he leaves at the end of the season or stays longer, one thing is clear—Victor Osimhen has already secured his place in Galatasaray folklore.
