Inside Onyedika’s failed move to Galatasaray

The summer transfer window nearly saw Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika make a switch to Turkish giants Galatasaray, following recommendations from Super Eagles teammate Victor Osimhen.

However, the deal ultimately fell through, with Galatasaray unable to meet Club Brugge’s valuation of the player.

Onyedika, who had agreed on personal terms with Galatasaray, was keen to move to Istanbul after seeing the positive reception Osimhen received upon his arrival at the club. Galatasaray made a bid of €17 million, but Club Brugge rejected the offer, holding out for a higher sum—around €20 million.

According to Fanatik, the significant factor in the breakdown of the deal was Club Brugge’s unwillingness to let Raphael Onyedika leave without sufficient time to find a replacement.

The Belgian side, currently dependent on the midfielder, felt his departure would disrupt their squad balance. This was despite Galatasaray’s late efforts to push the transfer over the line as the summer window closed.

Onyedika has had a mixed start to the 2024/2025 season, starting six times in Club Brugge's first seven Belgian Pro League matches. While he has yet to register a goal or assist, his contributions have been vital, averaging 4.4 duels won and 52 touches per game.

His performance in the Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund last week highlighted his importance to Club Brugge, making the rejection of Galatasaray’s bid even more justified from the Belgian club’s perspective.

Although the transfer didn’t materialize, Galatasaray are expected to revisit their interest in Onyedika in future windows, particularly given the club’s need to bolster their midfield depth.

For now, Onyedika remains a key player in Club Brugge’s campaign as they continue to compete across domestic and European competitions.
