Reprieve for NPFL clubs as CAF approves more stadiums

Published on by

There is some respite for the representatives of the NPFL in CAF Inter-club competition this coming season as CAF have granted concessions for where the teams will play their preliminary fixtures.

A few weeks ago, CAF only approved the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, causing a scramble for a ‘home pitch' by the Nigerian clubs involved.

However, CAF have had a change of heart and approved the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja and the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

This means Remo Stars will now host the home leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary stage fixture against AS FAR of Morocco, and El-Kanemi will travel to Abuja from their base in Maiduguri to face Dadje of Benin Republic at the MKO Stadium.

Nigeria Professional Football League champions Rangers have elected to play their Champions League home games at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Enyimba, who got a bye from the preliminary round of the Confederation Cup, are also expected to play their fixtures at the same stadium in Uyo pending other concessions by CAF.

It is a tough road ahead for the Nigerian teams in CAF inter-club competitions this season, with the preliminary rounds of both competitions kicking off on 16 August 2024.
