Victor Osimhen stole the spotlight with a brilliant brace, leading the Super Eagles to a commanding 2-0 victory over the Amavubi of Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Amahoro Stadium on Friday.

Osimhen opened the scoring for the Super Eagles in the 11th minute, calmly slotting home from an Ademola Lookman free-kick. The Galatasaray forward doubled Nigeria’s lead in first-half stoppage time, skillfully dribbling past a Rwandan defender before delicately lifting the ball over the onrushing Fiacre Ntwari.

Friday’s victory marked the Super Eagles' first win of the qualifiers after going winless in their previous four matches.

It also served as a perfect start for new manager Eric Chelle, who secured his first triumph with the three-time African champions in his debut game.

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Osimhen at the double as Super Eagles end winless streak

Victor Osimhen silenced the Rwandan crowd with a clinical performance, striking twice to propel Nigeria to a much-needed 2-0 victory at the Amahoro Stadium.

Making his return to the squad, the Napoli star showcased his predatory instincts, punishing a confident Amavubi side and breathing new life into the Super Eagles' World Cup qualifying campaign.

Heading into the match, the Super Eagles were winless in four games and sat uncomfortably in fifth place in the six-team group with just three points from three draws and one defeat.

However, this crucial victory has lifted them to fourth place in Group C with six points—four behind leaders South Africa, two adrift of second-placed Benin, and one behind Rwanda in third.

Chelle's side will host Zimbabwe on Tuesday, aiming to strengthen their World Cup qualification hopes after missing out on the previous edition.

Osimhen's double against Rwanda marked his 23rd and 24th goals for the Super Eagles since making his debut in Nigeria's 2-0 loss to South Africa in June 2017.
