Snubbed Super Eagles star earns ‘outstanding’ praise from boss

Southampton manager Russell Martin has expressed his admiration for Super Eagles star Joe Aribo following his remarkable performance in their 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Although Aribo and his teammates extended their winless run to seven games, his input in the game stood out as a highlight in an otherwise disappointing afternoon.

The Nigerian midfielder returned to the starting lineup after a four-match absence, joining fellow Nigerian Paul Onuachu, who made his long-awaited appearance after 511 days out of the Premier League.

While Arsenal dominated the game, Aribo delivered a gritty performance in midfield, contributing both defensively and offensively.

Although Cameron Archer opened the scoring for the Saints, the home side quickly responded, with goals from Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka sealing the win

Despite the defeat, Aribo's tenacity was incredible, particularly when he thwarted Leandro Trossard’s shot, although Saka capitalised on the loose ball to score Arsenal’s third goal.

Russell Martin, speaking after the match, described Aribo’s effort as “outstanding,” acknowledging the Nigerian’s resilience in a physically demanding encounter.

The 28-year-old midfielder, on the pitch for the full 90 minutes, made 46 touches of the ball, completed 29 passes, and won several key duels.

His defensive contributions included three tackles, two interceptions, and two clearances, showing off his all-round ability.

Even with his impressive performance, Aribo was omitted from Nigeria’s squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, a decision made by interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who was not obviously impressed.

The midfielder’s absence from the national team shouldn't come as a surprise, though, given his previous form before the game against Mikel Arteta's side.

However, Aribo will soon face a familiar opponent when Southampton host Wilfred Ndidi’s Leicester City in their next Premier League fixture.
