Rwanda vs Nigeria: Super Eagles held as Osimhen, Lookman foiled by goalkeeping clinic

Nigeria were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against a resilient Rwanda side in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Kigali.

Despite dominating possession and creating a flurry of chances, the Super Eagles could not find a breakthrough, as the hosts put on a defensive masterclass, led by their exceptional goalkeeper.

Nigeria dominated the match from the outset, but they struggled to convert their chances into goals. Ademola Lookman had a goal controversially ruled out for a foul in the 23rd minute.

Victor Boniface came closest to scoring in the first half, hitting the crossbar after 37 minutes.

Super Eagles top group, but issues remain

Throughout the game, Nigeria's final action let them down, with Osimhen, Moses Simon, and Lookman all having shots saved by the in-form Rwandan keeper.

Rwanda proved to be more than just defensive passengers, with their counterattacks occasionally threatening the Nigerian defense. Djihad Bizimana’s long-range effort tested Stanley Nwabali in the Nigerian goal, while Frank Onyeka had to make several key tackles to keep the hosts from grabbing a shock late lead.

Despite the draw, Nigeria remain top of their group with four points from two games, following their 3-0 win over Benin Republic.

However, concerns will linger about their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal. The result leaves the Super Eagles with work to do ahead of their upcoming double-header against Libya in October, where six points could all but secure their place at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

With Eguavoen’s side needing to sharpen their attack, the games against Libya present an opportunity for redemption after a frustrating evening in Kigali.
