Super Eagles AFCON 2023 squad numbers revealed

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the final squad lists for the 24 teams that will be at the Africa Cup of Nations.

With a week to the start of the competition, the official lists are finally out after provisional lists and squad announcements earlier done by various countries.

CAF had given teams the opportunity to register 25 or 27 players for the tournament and in line with the new guidelines, each country is expected to submit those numbers but only 23 can be in a matchday squad.

Consequently, a player in the final squad can only be replaced if he is seriously injured and not less than 24 hours before the team's opening match.

New numbers for Boniface and Nwabali

The Super Eagles squad numbers have also been revealed with the usual suspects maintaining their numbers while the debutants in the team have been allocated new numbers.

Team captain Ahmed Musa retained his number seven jersey while Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo, and Moses Simon all have been allocated their customary number 17, 10, and 15 respectively.

Enyimba goalkeeper Leke Ojo, who is attending his first senior tournament for Nigeria will wear number 16, while Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United will wear number 23.

Alhassan Yusuf of Antwerp, who was a late call-up to replace the crocked Wilfred Ndidi gets the number four jersey usually worn by the player he replaced.

Victor Boniface, who is also making his tournament debut for the Super Eagles picked number 24 and the African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen retains his number nine jersey.

Super Eagles to face Guinea on Monday

The Super Eagles are gearing up for a friendly match against Guinea’s Syli Nationale in Abu Dhabi on Monday evening. This game is part of their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria have been in residential camping in Abu Dhabi with 24 players being put through their paces for the upcoming tournament.

Leceister City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, who is dealing with an injury is expected to link up with the team squad on Tuesday evening before they head to the Ivorian capital on Wednesday, January 10th.
