Super Eagles camp updates: 20 players in camp for first training session

The Super Eagles camp for September's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) qualifying games opened on Monday, 2 September in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, Nigeria will square off against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on home soil this weekend. The clash will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday, 7 September.

Shortly after that, they will make the trip to Kigali to tackle the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, 10 September.

These are the players invited for the two AFCON qualifying games this month.

Goalkeepers: Stanley Nwabali (Chippa United, South Africa); Maduka Okoye (Udinese FC, Italy); Amas Obasogie (Bendel Insurance FC, Nigeria).

Defenders: William Troost-Ekong (Al-Kholood, Saudi Arabia), Bright Osayi-Samuel (Fenerbahce FC, Turkey); Semi Ajayi (West Bromwich Albion, England); Olisa Ndah (Orlando Pirates, South Africa), Bruno Onyemaechi (Boavista FC, Portugal), Calvin Bassey (Fulham FC, England); Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest, England).

Midfielders: Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England); Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge, Belgium); Alhassan Yusuf (New England Revolution, USA); Frank Onyeka (Augsburg, Germany); Alex Iwobi (Fulham FC, England); Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (Lazio, Italy).

Forwards: Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany); Victor Osimhen (SSC Napoli, Italy); Kelechi Iheanacho (Sevilla, Spain); Ademola Lookman (Atalanta FC, Italy); Samuel Chukwueze (AC Milan, Italy); Moses Simon (FC Nantes, France); Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest, England).

It is important to note that Fenerbahce's Bright Osayi-Samuel was dropped from the 23-man squad after failing to recover from an injury. He has been replaced by Crawley Town's Benjamin Tanimu.

Super Eagles camp: Confirmed arrivals

The Super Eagles camp in Uyo is buzzing after 20 of the invited players arrived at the team's hotel on Monday.

First-time invitee Olisa Ndah, who plies his trade in South Africa with Orlando Pirates, happens to be one of the early players to arrive at camp.

William Troost-Ekong and Nottingham Forest duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina, who all made their return to the fold after injury setbacks, have also arrived at the team's hotel.

West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi, new Lazio player Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and last season's Europa League final hero Ademola Lookman are the other players who have also made their way to Uyo.

Victor Boniface, Stanley Nwabali, Wilfred Ndidi and Amas Obasogie arrived later on Monday.

There were more arrivals on Tuesday as Moses Simon, Alhassan Yusuf, Frank Onyeka, Samuel Chukwueze, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Benjamin Tanimu made their way to Uyo.

Eguavoen and his coaching crew, which comprises Fidelis Ikechukwu (Rangers coach) and Daniel Ogunmodede (Remo Stars gaffer), will hold their first training session on Monday evening with the players available.
