The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hasve confirmed that Austin Eguavoen will remain as the interim head coach of the Super Eagles for the October international break, following the Federation’s inability to appoint a permanent coach.

This decision was approved by the NFF’s Executive Committee on Thursday, based on recommendations from the Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

Eguavoen, who currently serves as the NFF’s Technical Director, will lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Libya next month.

Austin Eguavoen to steer the Super Eagles again

The former Super Eagles captain initially took charge during the international window after the NFF’s pursuit of Bruno Labbadia failed to materialize.

In his temporary role, Eguavoen guided the team to a solid start in their AFCON qualifying campaign, securing four points from two matches.

The Super Eagles registered a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and played out a goalless draw with Rwanda in their opening fixtures earlier this month.

Nigeria currently sits atop Group D with four points, followed by Benin with three points, Rwanda with two, and Libya at the bottom with a single point.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the 2025 AFCON tournament, which will be held in Morocco.

The Super Eagles are set to face Libya in a Matchday 3 clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, October 11th, with kickoff scheduled for 5 pm.

The reverse fixture will take place in Benina, Libya, on Tuesday, October 15th, kicking off at 8pm Nigeria time.

In addition to his AFCON responsibilities, Eguavoen and his technical team, which includes Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa, and Tomaz Zorec, will also oversee the Super Eagles B team in their African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying campaign.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will host the next edition of the CHAN in 2025.
