The Super Eagles' chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup may have received a boost following confirmation that FIFA’s decision on South Africa’s potential breach of the rules is independent of an appeal.
Just before Nigeria’s clash with Zimbabwe last Tuesday in Uyo, reports emerged that South Africa had fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena.
However, on Wednesday, news broke that the Lesotho Football Federation had withdrawn the case against Bafana Bafana, citing financial constraints.

Lesotho initially missed the 24-hour appeal window, but later decided to protest. Eventually, they withdrew from the case, seemingly shutting the door on any consequences for South Africa.
This development was particularly frustrating for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), given Nigeria’s precarious position in the group.
Renewed hope for Super Eagles' World Cup aspirations?
FIFA and CAF legal expert, Mr. Raymond Hack, has however clarified that FIFA does not require an appeal to enforce its rules.
Speaking on Supersport’s ‘Soccer Africa’ magazine show, Hack stated: “Firstly, FIFA will have to determine whether there was an ineligible player.,” he stated.
“Assuming there was, the rules specifically say that if you field an ineligible player, you will lose the points, you will be fined, and the player will be further suspended.”

South Africa currently lead Group C of the African qualifiers with 13 points, while Nigeria sits in fourth place with seven points after six matches.
Only the group winners will secure an automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the four best second-placed teams will enter a knockout playoff.
With FIFA now expected to review the situation, Nigeria’s waning chances of qualification could be set for a boost.
