Super Eagles veteran Kenneth Omeruo has ruled out the possibility of returning to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), distancing himself from the trend set by some of his former national teammates.
Speaking on a Twitter Space, Omeruo, 31, expressed his admiration for the talent within Nigeria’s domestic league but made it clear that he doesn’t envision himself playing there again.
“The city I come from, Abuja, doesn’t have a club in the NPFL. I can’t go back to Akure to play—not because I can't stay there, but it’s just that I can’t see myself going back to the Nigerian league.

“I’m someone who likes scouting and I appreciate good players. I even share videos from our league with my agent. I know the quality we have; there’s too much quality,” Omeruo said.
Omeruo: Super Eagles legend dismisses idea of NPFL homecoming
The Kasimpasa captain’s remarks come at a time when several of his Super Eagles teammates, including Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, and Brown Ideye, have made high-profile returns to the NPFL.
Musa, 32, and Abdullahi, 31, currently feature for Kano Pillars, while Ideye, 36, joined Enyimba mid-season.
Omeruo, however, remains committed to his career in Europe. The former Chelsea defender is recovering from injury but has managed five league appearances this season for Kasimpasa.
With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, Omeruo is likely to continue plying his trade abroad.
The defender’s journey began at Sunshine Stars before a move to Standard Liège and subsequently Chelsea in 2012. Notably, Sunshine Stars benefited from a sell-on clause when Omeruo transferred to CD Leganés in 2019.
