Super Eagles defender quashes Nigeria rumours – ‘I’ll always be there’

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has dispelled rumours about retiring from international football after last Sunday’s defeat to the Ivory Coast in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 30-year-old was on the bench as the Super Eagles succumbed 2-1 to the Elephants, but despite the loss, the team received a lot of accolades from Nigerians.

Rumours? What Omeruo rumours?

There was also some background noise about some senior members of the team retiring from the national set-up, but Omeruo has come out to quash those rumours by emphatically denying he is retiring from international football.

The defender, who just days after the AFCON final was back on the pitch for his club Kasimpasa as they drew 1-1 with Fatih Karagumruk in the Turkish top flight, said as long as he is fit and extended an invitation, he will surely suit up for the Super Eagles.

“Retirement talk? Definitely not,” declared Omeruo with a chuckle, dispelling any doubts.

“I'm only 30, and I still have a lot to offer the team. As long as I'm playing regularly for my club and get called up, ‘I'll always be there', ready to serve.”

His words carry weight.

The future Super Eagles need experience

With 67 caps and counting, Omeruo is a veteran whose experience speaks volumes.

Since his debut against Cape Verde in 2013, he's witnessed the highs and lows of international football, his leadership and calm presence guiding the Super Eagles through various battles.

He was also part of the Stephen Keshi-led team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, cementing his place as one of Nigeria's greats.

Now, with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, Omeruo's presence takes on added significance.

His experience and unwavering commitment will be invaluable as the Super Eagles embark on their journey towards the global stage.

A mixture of youth and experience will definitely be a good tonic for Nigeria as they mount an assault on the World Cup and Nations qualifiers with an aim of going one step further at the next Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
