Workhorse Onyeka reveals key factor behind surprise Bundesliga switch

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has opened up about his last-minute decision to leave Brentford for Bundesliga side FC Augsburg on loan during the final day of the transfer window.

After three seasons at the English club, where he made 78 appearances, the Nigeria international opted for a change in search of regular first-team football.

Onyeka, who joined Brentford in the 2021/22 season, found himself in a rotational role, something he wasn’t fully satisfied with. Speaking to Brila Media, the Super Eagles star revealed that uncertainty over his role at Brentford prompted his move to Germany.

Desire for regular starts fueled Super Eagles midfielder

The 25-year-old midfielder explained how conversations with Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank played a key part in his decision to leave.

“I spoke to the coach and everyone at the club,” Frank Onyeka said. “I asked the coach about his plans for me, and he said I would play, but for me, I needed to start games consistently.”

Despite his contributions over the years, the promise of more game time wasn’t enough to convince Onyeka to stay. The coach planned to rotate him in and out of the lineup, but Onyeka was clear about wanting more regular starts.

“He said he would start me in some games and mix it up, but I needed to be in the starting XI,” Onyeka told Brila Media.

Since making the move to Augsburg, Onyeka—nicknamed ‘The Tank' for his physical style of play—has already featured in seven matches, providing one assist. His new team sits 13th in the Bundesliga table, and Onyeka is eager to cement his place as a key player.
