Anglo-Nigerian prospect Shola Shoretire marked his first goal contribution for PAOK Thessaloniki in their 3-0 victory over AO Egaleo in the Betsson Greek Cup round of 16 first leg on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old’s strike at the Stavros Mavrothalassitis Stadium highlighted a promising performance as he settles into life with the Double-Headed Eagles of the North.
Shoretire had made six appearances in all competitions before this fixture without registering a goal or assist, making this goal a significant step forward in his adaptation to Greek football.
A new start and International ambitions
After leaving Manchester United at the end of the 2023/24 season due to limited opportunities under manager Erik ten Hag, the Newcastle-born opted for a fresh start in Greece.
Despite interest from clubs in England, Spain, MLS, and Saudi Arabia, he committed to PAOK, seeking regular playing time.
Since his arrival in July 2024, Shoretire has accumulated seven appearances across the Greek Super League, the Betsson Greek Cup, and the UEFA Europa League, averaging just over 35 minutes per game.

Although Shoretire has represented England at several youth levels, from the U15s through to the U19s, intense competition has limited his opportunities with the U21s and Three Lions.
His last appearance was with the England U19 team in 2021. Born to a Nigerian father, Shoretire remains eligible to represent Nigeria at the senior level. A successful spell in Greece could see him catch the eye of Super Eagles coach Austine Eguavoen, as he looks to build his profile in international football.
