Super Eagles legend spoils likely Libya strategy

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has issued a stern warning to the Super Eagles, urging the team to be mindful of Libya's defensive tactics ahead of their crucial match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The three-time African champions are in preparation to host the Mediterranean Knights this Friday, in the knowledge that a win will put them within touching distance of qualifying for next year's tournament in Morocco.

But then, the former Nigerian international is highly optimistic that the Super Eagles will secure maximum points against their visitors, claiming that they possess the talent and determination needed to secure victory in both legs of the fixture.

Iklpeba pointed out the North Africans' tactics, emphasising their inclination to defend resolutely, especially with some key players sidelined.

The 1997 CAF Player of the Year, however, advised the Nigerian team to concentrate on their performance rather than getting distracted by Libya's challenges.

Ikpeba: Super Eagles hungry for redemption after criticism

“The Super Eagles have what it takes to punish Libya in both legs,” Ikpeba said on the Supersport TV program Monday Night Football.

“You have to respect Libya; they will come down to defend with their lives and rely on counterattacks. They may be missing some key players, but we shouldn’t bother ourselves with what is going on with them,” he added.

He revealed that the Super Eagles are motivated to display their strength, particularly after facing criticism following their World Cup qualifiers.

“The Super Eagles are fed up with the criticisms after the World Cup qualifiers; they now want to get it right. So, we should do the job on Friday, and that will lead us to another win in Libya,” Ikpeba concluded.

The three-time African champions, will aim to leverage their home advantage on Friday and maintain their momentum in the second encounter, with a focus on reclaiming their position in continental football.
