‘Eguavoen is better than Pep Guardiola’ – Nigerians react to Super Eagles vs Benin

Published on by , updated on

Nigeria's Super Eagles kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) qualifying campaign in style with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Benin Republic. This was a rematch of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, in which Nigeria suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat despite opening the scoring.

Led by Augustine Eguavoen on an interim basis, the Super Eagles put an end to their three-match winless run, scoring three goals in a competitive match for the first time since September 2023.

Ballon d'Or nominee Ademola Lookman put in a man-of-the-match performance on Saturday evening, scoring a brace for the Super Eagles.

Also, Galatasaray's Victor Osimhen scored his 22nd goal for Nigeria, moving ahead of Yakubu Ayegbeni to become the third-highest goal scorer in Super Eagles history.

With that in mind, Nigerians made their thoughts known on X (formerly Twitter).

Where does this result leave the Super Eagles?

As it stands, Nigeria currently lead the Group D table with three points. They are followed by Rwanda and Libya, who played to a 1-1 draw earlier this week, while Benin find themselves at the bottom of the group table.

Eguavoen and his troops will make the trip to Kigali for their second group game against Rwanda on Tuesday, 10 September.
