Super Eagles wing wizard suffers another injury setback in preseason

Super Eagles winger, Simon Moses, is facing yet another injury setback just as he was regaining fitness following a previous layoff. The Nantes forward has been a victim of misfortune in 2024, with a fractured fibula suffered on international duty in March marking a significant disruption to his season.

An important player for both club and country, Moses’ absence was deeply felt during Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers and towards the tail end of the season.

Without Simon, Nantes pulled off a last-minute escape from the Ligue 1 relegation zone on the final day of the 2023/2024 season as Auxerre dropped straight back down to Ligue 2.

His recovery and subsequent return to action in pre-season seemed to herald a fresh start, with the winger even captaining Nantes in a friendly and scoring. However, the latest injury blow has cast a shadow over his immediate future.

Nantes manager, Antoine Kombouaré, expressed his concern over Moses’ ankle issue, highlighting it as one of two injury worries ahead of the new season. “The two little worries are Simon (Moses) with his ankle still giving me problems and then little Adel (Mahamoud) who hurt his knee. I hope it’s not too serious,” he said, as quoted by Nantes Tribune.

The recurring injuries are a significant blow to both Nantes and the Super Eagles. Moses’ pace, creativity, and goal-scoring ability have been sorely missed in recent times, and his potential absence from the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers would be a severe setback for the Nigerian national team.
