Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has expressed her joy at meeting Brazil legend Marta after their recent clash with the South American country.

Abiodun, who plays for the University of Pittsburgh, started Nigeria’s first group game, which ended in a narrow 1-0 loss on Thursday.

She, along with her Nigerian teammates, had a challenging time containing the legendary Brazilian throughout the match and was clearly excited to meet Marta afterward.

Brazilian striker Gabi Nunes scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, capitalising on a brilliant assist from Marta that caught the Nigerian defence off guard.

After the game, Abiodun, who has often expressed her admiration for Marta, gushed about the encounter.

She took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share her happiness about interacting with the Brazilian icon.

“Last night, I had the honour of chatting with the one and only Marta, whose legacy has inspired generations,” she said.

“Sharing wisdom, experiences, and smiles with such an icon is truly unforgettable. Here’s to chasing dreams and making history,” Abiodun added.

Brazil legend Marta to retire after Olympics

Marta is  the only player to have scored in five different World Cups and is a six-time winner of the FIFA Best Player award.

The 38-year-old has announced that she will retire from international football after the Olympic Games, aiming to secure an Olympic gold medal in her final competition for Brazil.

Abiodun and her Super Falcons teammates will now focus on their next group games against world champions Spain and Japan.
