‘Don’t give your people false hope’ – Nigerians react to Super Falcons vs Spain

Published on by

Things did not go swimmingly for Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Sunday evening as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their second group game.

Randy Waldrum's troops held their own against the world champions for the most part, but Alexia Putellas put Spain ahead in the 85th minute, courtesy of a stunning free kick.

With that in mind, Nigerians made their thoughts known on X (formerly Twitter).

There are those who had nothing but praise for Chiamaka Nnadozie. The Paris FC shot-stopper made five excellent saves, and three of those were from shots taken inside the box.

Some had things to say about Randy Waldrum.

Can the Super Falcons still qualify for the quarterfinal?

The Super Falcons are still at the bottom of Group C table, and although there is just one game left to play, Waldrum's troops can still qualify for the knockout stages.

Two things need to happen for the Super Falcons to reach the last eight. Firstly, Spain would need to beat Brazil, as any other result would eliminate Nigeria from the competition.

Secondly, the Super Falcons would have to beat Japan by at least a two-goal margin. This might be a tough task, considering they have not scored in their last four matches.

Nigeria's final group game takes place on Wednesday 31 July. Kick-off time is 16:00 WAT.
