Victor Boniface: Uzbek-Nigerian glad Saudi switch failed, tips striker for European stardom

Published on by

Former Super Eagles striker Peter Odemwingie has expressed relief that Victor Boniface’s potential move to Saudi Arabia fell through earlier this year, believing it was ultimately a blessing in disguise for the talented striker's career.

Boniface was reportedly close to finalising a move to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Nassr reaching a €60 million agreement with Bayer Leverkusen. Sources indicated that the Nigerian forward had successfully completed his medical and had agreed to personal terms, which included a lucrative annual net salary of €15 million.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Al Nassr pulled out of the deal at the last minute, opting instead to sign Aston Villa’s Colombian forward, Jhon Durán.

Odemwingie, who has been closely monitoring Boniface’s development, feels the missed transfer could pave the way for a more significant European opportunity.

‘He has the tools to succeed in Europe’ – Odemwingie weighs in on Boniface’s future

In a recent interview with Africafoot, Odemwingie expressed confidence in Victor Boniface’s future, stating that the striker is poised for greater success in European football after his reported move to Saudi Arabia fell through.

“Honestly, I saw his possible departure for Saudi Arabia last January as a waste,” Odemwingie said.

“Fortunately, it didn’t happen, and I think it’s a good thing for his career. Victor is a player of inestimable talent. I’m convinced that by the next transfer window, he’ll have several offers from big European teams, and he’ll have to take on this challenge.

“He has the profile, for example, to make his mark in England or Spain. He’s a young striker who can still improve on certain details of his game, and I think he would be a great addition to his next club.”

Boniface has made a notable impact for Die Werkself this season, tallying 10 goals and one assist in 25 appearances across all competitions.
