Victor Osimhen: Toast of Saudi clubs matches personal best as Galatasaray step up title charge

Published on by

Victor Osimhen continues to underline his status as one of Europe’s deadliest forwards, matching his career-best tally for goals in a single season.

The Super Eagles striker was at the heart of Galatasaray’s 5-1 demolition of Eyüpspor on Sunday, scoring once and assisting another to keep his side firmly in control of the Turkish Super Lig title race.

With five matches left, Gala sit five points clear of Fenerbahce. While the title is not yet secured, the momentum is firmly with them and Osimhen is leading the charge.

The 26-year-old’s previous best season came at Napoli during their famous 2022/23 Serie A triumph, when he scored 31 goals in 39 appearances. On Sunday, he drew level with that mark, striking his 31st goal in just 35 matches for Galatasaray.

Complete forward display from red-hot Victor Osimhen

Osimhen’s influence against Eyüpspor was far-reaching. In 76 minutes of action, he recorded two shots on target, two off target, and saw another two efforts blocked. He also struck the woodwork once and missed a clear chance, but his persistence was rewarded.

He completed 75% of his passes (12 out of 16), created one key chance, and successfully executed three of his four dribble attempts. His assist came early, as he set up Roland Sallai's opener following a corner, before getting on the scoresheet himself with a precise finish in the 71st minute.

Beyond personal milestones, there is a bigger prize in sight. Osimhen, the 2023 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, currently leads the Turkish league’s golden boot race, two goals clear of Krzysztof Piątek. With form like this, more records, and possibly silverware are within touching distance.
